's lead, the state's closing arguments in the george zimmerman second-degree murder trial. this afternoon, the prosecution gave the jury its summary of the case against mr. zimmerman. a dramatic, emotional presentation. he believes he profiled, followed, and gunned down trayvon martin. it came just hours after the judge ruled that the jury can also consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. a decision that could have a huge impact on how the jury decides this case. lots to talk about. but we start with the closing arguments. the prosecution reminding the jury of what their case is all about. >> good afternoon. a teenager is dead. he is dead through no fault of his own. he is dead because another man made assumptions. that man assumed certain things. he is dead not just because the man made those assumptions, because he acted upon those assumptions. and unfortunately, unfortunately, because his assumptions were wrong, they von benjamin martin no longer walks on this earth. unfortunately, this is one of the last photos that will ever be taken of trayvon martin. and that is true because of
comes to the verdict in the george zimmerman trial. so we are now on verdict watch. after 24 days in court, 12 days of testimony, 56 witnesses, george zimmerman's fate is in the hands of six female jurors. with me today for it all, jonathan capehart, steve kornacki, lisa bloom, and patrick murphy, seema ayer, and paul henderson. of course, we have kerry sanders live in florida. let's start down there. kerry, riveting stuff in the defense's final arguments and the prosecution's rebuttal. you were inside the court for it all. how did it play out in the courtroom, kerry? >> reporter: well, it was fascinating to watch it unfold. you know, it's a different view than when you see it on those cameras. perhaps the most interesting thing was to look at the jurors. i could concentrate on them. i found them to be somewhat stone faced. it's not as if you can read where they are. they're looking both at the defense attorney mark o'mara and looking at john guy, who did the rebuttal for the state with the same intensity. taking few notes. in fact, during john guy's rebuttal, i only saw one juror
in san francisco tonight. but we start with a big day in the george zimmerman trial. tonight's lead, the scene of the altercation today. with the defense getting ready to rest tomorrow, focus in the zimmerman murder trial was on the fateful moment of struggle right before mr. zimmerman killed martin. who was the aggressor. who's life was in danger. all playing to the key question, did george zimmerman have a right to self-defense to kill trayvon martin? today the defense called a forensic pathologist to the stand who supported zimmerman's claim that martin was on top. >> this indicated that the gun was not against the skin, but the clothing itself had to be 2 to 4 inches away from the body. at the time mr. martin was shot. if you lean over somebody, you will notice that the clothing tends to fall away from the chest. if instead you're lying on your back and somebody shoots you, the clothing is going to be against your chest. so that the fact that we know the clothing was two to four inches away is consistent with somebody leaning over the person doing the shooting. >> that testimony

, florida, with the george zimmerman trial. testimony has just wrapped up from a forensic pathologist who, as you may have heard, specializes in analysis of bullets and firearms. he testified that the concentration of powder marks around trayvon martin's gunshot wound backs up the zimer man story that martin was on top of him, on some of zimmerman, during their struggle that fateful day. the next witness is taking the stand now. let's turn to lisa bloom. i think we have a minute here, lisa. what's your latest update? >> well, you're right. he was very good on direct examination, saying that george zimmerman's story was consistent, and that's the buzz word, consistent with the medical evidence. it's also consistent with some other possibilities. . that came out on cross-examination. for example, if trayvon martin was pulling away and george zimmerman was holding his shirt at the time, the medical and scientific evidence would be consistent with that scenario. he also said that george zimmerman could have hit trayvon martin and not have any bruising on him. absence of evidence does not mean

"usa today" reporters amy asandor. lisa, set the stage for what we've heard so far as they were arguing their conflicting arguments before the judge as to what the lesser charge should be permitted. >> right. so it was all about what charges are going to go to the jury this morning. we've all wondered is it just going to be the murder charge that the prosecution filed over a year ago or nothing, or is there something in between? prosecutors wanted the charges in between and they got one of them. they got manslaughter. that will go to the jury and that's a lesser included offense to the murder charge. there's still one more remaining to be decided and that's third degree felony murder which involves an allegation of child abuse. there were fireworks in the courtroom this morning when the defense heard about that. they said child abuse, are you kidding me? we're hearing
